Parker, the fourth in the Spenser series, which was originally published in 1976 and won the Mystery Writers Of America association’s Edgar Award for best novel. The book was “Promised Land” by Robert B. It wasn’t the best designed cover in the world (see below) but it was published by Penguin and it sounded cool and so I bought it. One day I was browsing in the crime section of W H Smiths in Kettering and a title caught my eye. I got into the Sara Paretsky “V I Warshawski” series, the Hannah Wolfe novels of Sarah Dunant and various stand-alone titles, mainly by American writers. In the late 80s, after seeing “The Long Goodbye” on Moviedrome, I began reading Raymond Chandler and quickly fell in love with crime fiction. ![]()

I was thrilled to report in Barbados last month for all the expected reasons (weather, beaches, food) and a slightly less conventional one: This would be my first time reporting a story entirely in English in more than a decade. In the lead-up to the trip, as my anxiety grew over driving on the left side of the road and making sure I had all my interviews confirmed, I comforted myself with the notion that doing something in one’s native language inherently makes it easier.Of course, I was wrong.Between Britishisms and Bajanisms, I frequently found myself asking, “What?” There were interviews where I even considered inquiring if the person spoke some Spanish. But, like any language, it only took a strong dose of humility – and tuning my ear to what was initially a linguistic puzzle. ![]() 6/21/2023 0 Comments Fablehaven books![]() ![]() To save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world, Kendra and Seth must find the courage to do what they fear most.
